Jan Thomas Hiemstra in the meeting
Damascus - SANA

Electricity Minister Imad Khamis discussed with Regional Director of the UN Development Program (UNDP) Jan Thomas Hiemstra the mechanisms of cooperation between the two sides and means to improve the condition of power plants in Syria in a way that ensures supplying power to all citizens around the country.
Khamis made a review of the situation of the electricity sector in the country in light of the terrorist war waged against it and the systematic
targeting of power plants, oil pipelines and railways by the armed terrorist groups.
“The Electricity Ministry has made extra steps to ensure that all citizens have access to power,” Khamis said.
The Syrian Minister said that the “simplest way to perform the noble roles of the UN must concentrate on drying up the sources of terrorism and prosecuting its financers and backers,” which will consequently lead to alleviating the suffering of the people exposed to terrorism.
For his part, the UNDP Regional Director noted that the UNDP has modified its work plan in Syria to meet the priorities set by the government under
the new circumstances imposed by the crisis.
Hiemstra proposed a project to contribute to improving electricity services in Syria.
The project provides for securing the necessary spare parts for power generating plants and the technical support for installation by the
government of Japan through the Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA), according to Hiemstra.
He noted that the implementation of the project should be done in coordination between the UNDP and the Electricity Ministry, stressing the need that the project be a starting point for cooperation in other fields to secure all the requirements of the electricity sector in Syria.
