The benchmark DAX index at the Frankfurt Stock Exchange on Wednesday shed 70.33 points and closed at 9867.75 points.
The tension in Iraq and Ukraine and the concern about the economic data from the United States are thought to be behind the sentiment of investors on Wednesday.
Commerzbank AG rose by 1.72 percent to 11.83 euros per share, topping the list of the risers. Deutsche Telekom AG and Deutsche Post AG rose by 0.39 percent and 0.08 percent each.
HeidelbergCement AG suffered a loss of 2.66 percent, followed by K+S Aktiengesellschaft, Fresenius SE & Co. KGaA, Infineon Technologies AG and RWE AG St on the list of top five fallers.
The turnover was 2.93 billion euros (around 3.99 billion U.S. dollars).
