Cairo - Mohamed Al-Touny

The crisis of Al-Warraq Island in Egypt, and the clashes between the police and the people of the island, have opened the file of infringement of buildings on the Nile islands.

For his part, Major General Ahmed Suleiman, deputy of the local administration committee in the Egyptian parliament, called for the necessity of developing all the islands to preserve the aesthetic form of the Nile, as well as to eliminate the violations and stop any clashes resulting from any decisions to stop infringement of buildings on state land.

Egypt Today interviewed the Egyptian MP, who denied the existence of an inventory of the number of the Nile islands in Egypt in the parliament. "The Nile River passes through all of Egypt's governorates, specifically the branch of Rashid has a number of infringements," Suleiman said, adding that the executive authorities in each governorate have a comprehensive inventory of the number of islands and the extent of infringements.

Regarding the legalization of the conditions of these islands, he stressed that it is in accordance with the need in each island, if the state needs for a particular island, the infringements on it must be removed. He added that the state must provide suitable places for the people in those areas, or legalizing their buildings and making a reconciliation and implementing the law passed by parliament at the end of the second session.

On the cause of increased pollution of the Nile water from these islands, he stressed that the nature of these islands make their people need to move in a certain way, as there is no sewage properly, in addition to everyone dumps the garbage in the Nile directly.

Regarding those who built on the Nile islands in Egypt, he pointed out that there are some businessmen take up large areas of these islands for the establishment of villas and luxury housing, adding that it must be taken away from them. As for simple people, he added that the state must provide suitable places for them or legalizing their buildings on those islands.

On the accusation of the government that the recent decisions to remove and stop infringement of buildings on state land for the benefit of businessmen in favor of investment projects, he said that this is not true, as most businessmen refuse to remove the infringements on these islands, because a large number of them have large property on its lands.

Regarding the role of his committee, Suleiman revealed during the interview that the committee in the third session will address this matter, and will hold meetings in this regard in coordination with all parties and stakeholders, and work to implement the law that was adopted in the last session.
