The UN Security Council on Thursday "condemned in the strongest terms" three terrorist attacks in the Iraqi capital, which resulted in the deaths of at least 93 people.

The Security Council "reiterated that terrorism in all its forms and manifestations is criminal and unjustifiable," the 15-nation UN body said in a statement.

The Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), also known as Da'esh, has claimed responsibility for Wednesday's attacks, which also injured many other persons.

"The members of the Security Council lamented that these latest victims are a sad addition to the thousands of Iraqi civilians killed this year," it said.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Wednesday condemned these attacks, Ban's spokesman said in a statement. "He called on the authorities to do their utmost to quickly bring the perpetrators to justice."

The Security Council also "underlined the need to bring the perpetrators, organizers, financiers and sponsors of these reprehensible acts of terrorism to justice."

The council members stressed the need to take measures to prevent and suppress the financing of terrorism, terrorist organizations and individual terrorists in accordance with resolutions 2199 (2015) and 2253 (2015), the statement said.

"The members of the Security Council expressed their deep sympathy and condolences to the families of the victims and to the people and government of Iraq," the statement said. "They wished the injured a speedy recovery."

"The members of the Security Council condemned all attacks perpetrated by ISIL (Da'esh) against the people of Iraq in an attempt to destabilize the country and region," the statement said.

"They reiterated their commitment to Iraq's independence, sovereignty, territorial integrity and national unity, as well as to its security. "

"The members of the Security Council welcomed the efforts of the government of Iraq and its partners to counter ISIL and return stability to the country," it said.

The deadliest among Wednesday's attacks killed 64 people and wounded 87 in a market in the Sadr City region of the Iraqi capital.

Later, two suicide bombers targeted police checkpoints in the northern district of Kadhimiya and in Jamia, in the west, leaving 29 dead.
