Morocco’s House of Representatives will elect its new president Monday at 4 pm.

The election follows the council of Ministers, chaired by King Mohammed VI last Tuesday.

This was done in preparation for Morocco’s return to the African Union (AU) during the next AU summit, which is set to take place on January 30 and 31, in Ethiopia’s capital, Addis Ababa.

In the meantime, Morocco’s parliament should be ready to ratify the Constituent Act of the AU, signed in Lomé on July 11, 2000.

As soon as the meeting between the political parties ended on Friday at the government’s headquarters, parliament’s oldest member, Abdelwahed Radi, who is set to chair the elections’ session, told reporters that “the political parties agreed to set Monday as the day to elect the House of Representatives,” noting that “the Friday’s meeting marked the presence of only 12 political parties.”

Radi added that the meeting’s agenda included consultation on the next step for electing the president and the creation of committees, which will supervise the formation of the bill covering Morocco’s return to the AU.

He went on to note that “this is not the first time in the history of Morocco, in which the House of Representatives has been formed ahead of the formation of the new government.”

“During the meeting there was no argument over the new government’s opposition or coalition parties,” he added.

Morocco’s appointed Head of Government, Abdelilah Benkirane, said on Thursday that King Mohammed VI would  travel to Addis Ababa for the AU summit to lobby for Morocco’s return to the Pan-African organization following an absence of 32 years.
