Secretary General of the United Nations, Ban Ki-moon, told Le Journal du Dimanche in an interview that as Secretary General, he hoped that the sense of unity would prevail in the Brexit matter, but the British have made their choice and "we must respect it."

Ban, who was on a visit to Paris, hoped that the implementation of Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty, which provided for the release of an EU member state, would take place in the most pragmatic way.

"The United Kingdom and the European Union are essential and powerful partners of the UN and a lot of work remains ahead of us," he commented.

"The European Union...is especially generous to the UN in the field of development aid and human rights. My message to all is very clear: when we walk together, we are stronger. I now hope that the British will overcome the challenges ahead."
