Presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump said on Monday he would suspend immigration from areas of the world where terrorism was prevalent in the wake of the deadliest mass shooting in American history.
"When elected, I will suspend immigration from areas of the world where there is a proven history of terrorism against the United States, Europe, or our allies, until we fully understand how to end these threats," said Trump during his national security address in New Hampshire.
He did not elaborate on how those areas would be defined.
It also remained unclear whether his pledge on Monday was a change from his another proposal of temporarily banning foreign Muslims entering the United States.
Decrying the "dysfunctional immigration system" under an "incompetent administration", Trump said he would develop a "responsible" immigration policy.
"If I get in there (White House), it's going to change, and it's going to change quickly," said the New York billionaire developer and former reality show star. "We are going from totally incompetent to just the opposite, believe me.
