the climax of blackmail and bullying

Oraib Al-Rantawi

Israel’s blackmail of the world’s superpower is reaching its climax in these last few days. It is expected to increase as we approach the US presidential elections in November. All promises and pledges were given by the Obama administration to prevent Iran from joining the nuclear club. The endless advanced weapons provided to Israel from an iron dome, to missile shield, to the secret warehouses stacked with guided bombs of the heaviest calibre, Netanyahu still doesn’t think that the Obama administration has done enough to stand in Iran’s way to the nuclear bomb. In the past days, Israeli newspapers covered non- stop the Iran strike. Published reports about meetings between Netanyahu and Dan Shapiro where “sparks fly”, which was seen as another form of blackmail. Although Washington has no other job but to dissipate the existential obsessions engrained in the Israeli mentality and psyche, such reports can be a valid description of all recent forthcoming American-Israeli meetings. The Chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff has run out of patience and expressed his unwillingness to join Israel in case the latter decided to go for a solitary strike against Iran. His forces are not ready to be involved in a war decided unilaterally by Israel. This is the first time a statement has been made public by the most senior American military official who rejects Washington’s involvement in a war imposed on it. It is undoubtedly a shock for Netanyahu and Obama who have been leading the mobilisation, incitement, and preparation for the coming war. European capitals and leaders  whose deep friendship to Israel is not subject to doubt , have also rejected the unilateral strike where Angela Merkel joined General Dempsey,  in warnings that the move would undermine international efforts to isolate Iran and impose tight and firm straps of effective sanctions on it. Netanyahu is failing to convince Israel’s allies and supporters in providing a cover for the military adventure against Iran.  He failed to convince both the security and military level in Israel to keep up in his mad risk. He was subjected to a political and moral stab from President Shimon Perez , who raised doubts around Israel’s ability to cause real harm to Iran’s nuclear program without Washington’s support and involvement. Netanyahu however, does not give in nor give up. He is bent on continuing the blackmail policy he adopts in dealing with the Obama administration, a policy that has yielded great results so far, and is likely to bare greater fruits as the gap narrows between Obama and Romney in the run up to the White House. Netanyahu’s last tactic is based on seizing a declared official, and timed commitment from the President of the United States of America that the world’s superpower is going to war with Iran if it fails in negotiations with the 5+1 group according to a time limit that doesn’t exceed the end of the current year. He wants to get hold of the war’s decision which would be committing to Obama and Romney, whoever wins the elections, or else he would go to war alone to let Obama carry the burden of what holocaust may befall the Jews sooner or later. On the one hand, nobody in the world does anything similar to what Netanyahu does. No country in the world acts like the spoilt children of rich people or corrupt officials, who never stop acting silly, or causing trouble to their parents due to their lack of discipline. On the other hand, their deep belief is that they are above the law and that they will never have to stand before justice. We don’t know if Dempsey will remain firm in his position, or if his stances reflect a firm American policy. Or will we soon see a humiliating retreat from these stances, that is if politics knows any value for ethical concepts like dignity and respect.  The views expressed by the author do not necessarily represent or reflect the editorial policy of Arabstoday.
