Libya's Navy Chief of Staff Hassan Boushnak has survived an assassination attempt and suffered minor injuries, a navy spokesman said on Wednesday. Unknown armed assailants driving a dark SUV attacked Boushnak in the morning as he was on his way to his office, said the spokesman, Qasim Ayub. "The chief of staff suffered a minor injury and his two security guards had the gunmen dealt with," Ayub said. Authorities did not confirm whether the incident was related to recent attacks on government institutions and officials by rogue general Khalifa Haftar's forces. Tripoli and other key Libyan cities have recently witnessed a wave of violence after Haftar launched a campaign against Libya's parliament in an apparent effort to bring down the interim government. Haftar said he was trying to rid the country of " terrorists."
