German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble said Saturday Berlin wants his deputy Joerg Asmussen as the European Central Bank's chief economist in place of Juergen Stark who resigned on Friday. Schaeuble told a press conference during a meeting of G8 finance ministers in Marseille that Asmussen, 45, a social democrat, was being put forward to replace Stark, whose decison to quit sent European stock markets plunging.
