McDonald's has recalled millions of Hello Kitty toy whistles over concerns that the toy's detachable parts pose a choking hazard for young children.
According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, "Hello Kitty® Birthday Lollipop" Whistles were sold as part of McDonald's Happy Meals from October to November 2014.
"Consumers should immediately take the whistle away from children and return it to any McDonald's for a free replacement toy and either a yogurt tube or a bag of apple slices," the agency said.
McDonald's has received two reports of children who choked on the toy, including one who received medical attention.
In a statement on its website, the fast food chain said it had recovered 70 percent of the whistles.
"Nothing is more important to us than the safety of our customers and this includes the toys we offer them," the company said, adding that it had expressed "sincere apologies" to the families of the affected children.
