Portuguese and Spanish police say they have apprehended 1,300 kilograms (2,800 pounds) of cocaine with a street value of around 80 million euros ($103 million) in a joint operation أ¢â‚¬â€‌ a seizure they say is one of the biggest in Europe this year.
According to AP, Portuguese detective Luis Mota Carmo told reporters Wednesday the drug was captured last weekend in southern Portugal during a cross-border operation.
He said Portuguese police arrested three Spaniards, while Spanish police made six arrests four Spaniards, and two Moroccans who are residents in the Netherlands.
Police suspect the cocaine was intended for sale in northern and central Europe.
International authorities say Portugal, Spain, the Netherlands and Belgium are the main points of entry for cocaine destined for western Europe.
