Old meets new at the Falaki Theatre, as contemporary Egyptian electronic musician Mahmoud Refat will deliver a live score to a documentary film by Walter Rutmann capturing 1927 Berlin. Cairene Mahmoud Refat (b.1974) founded the Cairo-based record label 100Copies Music and established the 100Live Electronic Music Festival in Cairo. A composer of soundtracks for performing arts, cinema, experimental videos and TV documentaries, his work includes international collaborative projects, installations and audio-visual performances. By delivering a contemporary live score to this silent documentary film of the city of Berlin, Mahmoud Refat presents a musical interpretation of the movie while placing it within a different context. Furthermore, the artist attempts to present "a space for the re-animation of the narrative, thus creating the opportunity for a real encounter and the possibility for a document from the past to be experienced as a living sensitised moment from our contemporary culture," according to the event's press release. Programme: Wednesday, 4 December, at 8pm Falaki Theatre, American University in Cairo, Falaki Campus, Downtown, Cairo Source: Ahram Online
