Egypt's Grand Mufti Shawqi Allam has announced that the month of Ramadan will begin on Saturday.
Allam is the head of Dar Al-Iftaa, the main authority responsible for issuing religious edicts and for determining the date of Islamic festivals according to the lunar calendar.
During Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, Muslims abstain from drinking and eating from dawn until dusk.
