Last Sunday 20 players from the Congo DR football club Virgin KA were drowned when the three boats they were travelling in sank on the Luapula River in Zambia. In a letter addressed to the Federation Congolaise de Football-Association (FECOFA), FIFA President Joseph S. Blatter expressed his condolences to the families of the victims and offered them his support. “On behalf of FIFA and in my own name, I am writing to you and the Federation Congolaise de Football-Association to extend my most sincere condolences,” he said in a message forwarded to FECOFA President Constant Omari Selemani. “I would be most grateful if you would pass on the deep sympathy and support of the entire international football family to the families, loved ones and clubs of the deceased at this very difficult time.” The 20 players were returning from a friendly match in Zambia when the accident occurred. The three boats, which were said to be carrying around 100 people, capsized when they were hit by a large wave caused by a passing motor boat.
