New York - Arab Today
The UN Security Council has unanimously adopted a resolution endorsing an international road map for a peace process in Syria, something Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry says is in line with Egypt's calls for action to end the armed conflict in the Arab country.
Speaking to MENA on the sidelines of the international meeting on Syria here Saturday, Shoukry stressed the need to unify efforts to launch the peace process between the Syrian government and opposition.
This is the only way to settle the conflict in Syria, outline a Syrian constitution and hold Syrian elections under UN supervision, the top diplomat said.
It is the only way to achieve stability in Syria, guarantee the unity of its soil and eliminate terrorism there, he added.
Egypt rejects foreign interference in Syria, Shoukry said, noting that this is only meant to serve certain political interests.
Ceasefire calls are important and all Syrian rivals should lay down their arms, the Foreign Minister further said.
Asked about a definition of what constitutes a terrorist organization, Shoukry said that the Syria Support Group (SSG) has been seeking to make a list of terrorist organizations that should be excluded.
It is an attempt to reach a common world understanding in designating terrorist organizations and how to deal with them, he noted.
