Admiral Habibollah Sayyari

Iran's Navy Commander Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyari said Saturday the country's naval forces plan to build more advanced destroyers to boost its defense capabilities, Press TV reported.

Iran's Navy managed to achieve progress in acquiring the necessary technology for building destroyers but seeks to manufacture more advanced destroyers, Sayyari added.

It is necessary to possess state-of-the-art weapons to defend the country, the Iranian commander said.

"Iran has no intention of aggression against other countries' interests and resources by manufacturing advanced military equipment," he added.

The Iranian Navy launched its first domestically-built destroyer, Jamaran, in the Arab Gulf in February 2010. The 1,420-ton destroyer is equipped with modern radar systems and other electronic warfare capabilities. It also features highly- advanced anti-aircraft, anti-surface and anti-subsurface systems.
