The top security alert in force in Brussels to prevent a repeat of the bloody Paris attacks will remain in place Monday in face of a continued "serious" threat, Belgian Premier Charles Michel said.

"The threat is considered serious and imminent," Michel said Sunday, a day after the authorities raised the alert level in the capital from three to four.

The city's metro system will stay closed and all schools will be shut on Monday, he said following after a meeting of the national security council to review the situation.
