A 1-0 win over hosts France on Easter Monday meant England under-16s finished the Montaigu Tournament in third place. And Newcastle youngster Alex Gilliead made his third appearance of the competition as a latesubstitute, replacing Arsenal\'s Alex Iwobi for the final ten minutes as Liverpool\'s Jerome Sinclair scored the only goal. Consett-based Gilliead, who has broken into United\'s under-18s team in recent weeks, was called into the squad as a late replacement for Derby\'s Mason Bennett and was an unused substitute in the opening game, a 1-1 draw against Japan. But he started in a 1-0 win over Morocco and in a 2-2 draw with Russia, which England lost on penalties to set up the third-fourth place play-off against the French. Young Lions coach Kenny Swain told the official FA website: \"It\'s been as good as any of the trips that we\'ve had to Montaigu in previous years so we\'ve been pleased with it overall. \"As it was the 40th anniversary of the competition, there were 12 nations competing this year and the lads have had the benefit of playing against Asian, African, Eastern European and European teams. \"That is a priceless experience and offers a different nature of challenges for them to adjust to.\" Meanwhile, 16-year-old Gilliead - who made his international debut against Wales last year - will speak to nufc.co.uk about his experiences later this week.
