Budapest Mayor Istvan Tarlos

The Hungarian capital Budapest has moved closer to launching a bid to host the 2024 Olympic Games, with the final decision resting on a vote next month.

"Budapest City Hall will vote on the city's application on June 23," a press officer for Budapest City Hall told AFP in an email Monday.

Last week the city's mayor Istvan Tarlos, who previously thought a bid was unviable, backed the idea, proposed by the Hungarian Olympic Committee in February.

Cities have until September 15 to enter bids and the International Olympic Committee will make a decision in Lima in 2017.

Boston in the United States, Hamburg in Germany and Rome are already candidates, while the Paris city lawmakers, with the backing of President Francois Hollande, has also approved making a bid.
