A professor of Islamic and Coptic monuments said Saturday that the Hanging Church is one of the oldest Coptic churches.
The Hanging Church was built in Basilican style, said Hagagi Ibrahim of Tanta University.
The Hanging Church was also the first papal seat in Cairo.
The Hanging (suspended) Church is named for its location above a gatehouse of Babylon Fortress, the Roman fortress in Old Cairo; its nave is suspended over a passage.
