German Chancellor Angela Merkel has sent her condolences to Turkey over the death of scores in Sunday morning attack in Istanbul.

She said "terrorists ... have carried out an inhumane and devious attack on people who wanted to celebrate the New Year together", according to ABC News on Sunday.

"My thoughts this morning are with the victims, their families and friends," she noted.
