Abu Dhabi - Arab Today
The deadly terror attack in Giza province, which resulted in the death and injury of dozens of Egyptian troops and police officers, is a despicable and heinous act that highlights the need for more stringent and united measures by the world community to tackle the evil of terrorism, a UAE daily said today.
"Terrorism in all its forms and manifestations constitutes one of the most serious threats to international peace and security, as the United Nations Security Council emphasised," an editorial in Monday's The Gulf Today said.
"All UN member states should combat threats to international peace and security caused by such terrorist acts, by all means, in accordance with the UN Charter as well as other obligations under international law, including international human rights law, international refugee law and international humanitarian law.
The dedication of the Egyptian police officers and their sacrifice for their noble mission in protecting the homeland and the citizens from the evils of crime deserves commendation.
Egypt holds a special place in the hearts of UAE nationals and residents. There are multi-dimensional links connecting the two countries and the two peoples, especially in light of the huge presence of the Egyptian community in the UAE.
The UAE and Egypt share the same opinion that terrorism is a threat to the nations, to the reputation of tolerant Islam, and to all people.
Dr. Anwar Gargash, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, has rightly assured all that the UAE stands in total solidarity with the Egyptian government in its fight to combat terrorism.
These acts of violence seek to wreak havoc on Egypt and its people, but will not undermine the country’s resolve to eradicate terrorism, he pointed out.
Two months ago, the UAE, represented by the Ministry of Community Development, participated in the first meeting of senior officials from Arab countries, held in Cairo.
At the meeting, Hussain Al Sheikh, Social Care Adviser at the Ministry, presented the UAE’s policies and initiatives to face extremism while highlighting the nation’s strategy, since its establishment, to combat terrorism using legislative and legal policies, cultural and religious values, and the media.
Egypt can draw huge comfort from the fact that it has the backing of the entire world in its attempts to combat merciless militants and restore stability. There is a need to bring the perpetrators, organisers, financiers and sponsors of these reprehensible acts of terrorism to justice.
Those intending evil endeavours on Egyptian soil are bound to fail," concluded the Sharjah-based daily.
