Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, spokesman of the national disaster management agency

At least one person was killed and 26 others went missing as landslides struck East Java province in western Indonesia on Saturday, Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, spokesman of the national disaster management agency, said.

The landslides triggered by heavy downpours occurred in Banaran village of Ponorogo district, hitting 25 to 30 houses, Sutopo said.

The disaster also injured 17 people and all of them had been treated at a nearby health clinic, the spokesman said.

Difficult access to the scene had hampered the rescue operation which was halted as night fell, he added.
