Israeli police on Monday opened fire and critically injured a Palestinian outside Jerusalem’s Herod's Gate after he allegedly stabbed and injured two police officers, according to local sources and Israeli police.
Israeli police claimed that the youth, who was not immediately identified but said to be in his early 20s, had pulled a knife and stabbed two police officers, one of them a female officer, before another policeman at the scene shot and seriously injured him, Palestinian news agency (WAFA) reported.
The female officer was reported in critical condition while the second policeman received moderate injuries.
Police said the injured Palestinian and the police officers were taken to hospitals in Jerusalem for treatment.
This is the second alleged stabbing incident in Jerusalem since Friday when a Jordanian national was shot and killed after he reportedly attempted to stab Israeli police officers outside Jerusalem’s Damascus Gate.
Israel turned over on Sunday the body of the Jordanian, identified as Said Amro, 28, to the Jordanian authorities at Allenby (King Hussein) bridge.
Three other Palestinians were also shot and killed last week after alleged attacks all in the Hebron area in the south of the West Bank.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu decided on Sunday to increase police and army presence in Jerusalem and the West Bank in light of resurgence of attacks after a long lull.
