Second meeting for Donors Coordination Group on the humanitarian aspect

Dr. Abdulaziz bin Hamad Al-Owaisheq, Assistant Secretary-General of the Riyadh-based Gulf Cooperation Council for Political Affairs and Negotiations, has chaired the 2nd Meeting for Donors Coordination Group on the Humanitarian Aspect for Yemen, hosted by the Secretariat-General of the GCC in New York yesterday on the sidelines of the annual meetings of the United Nations General Assembly.

The group, which was established in July 2017, includes senior donors, with its chairmanship rotating among the GCC Secretariat-General, the European Union and the United Nations.

During the meeting, the humanitarian and developmental assistance offered by the GCC to Yemen through organisations affiliated with the GCC or the United Nations over the last ten years were reviewed. The attendees were informed that the assistance surpassed US$15 billion, out of which more than $3 billion came from the GCC countries in the humanitarian domain since 2015. As for developmental assistance to Yemen, the meeting said that has exceeded $11.2 billion since 2006, including infrastructure, energy, education and health projects in areas recaptured by the legitimate government.

Also discussed during the meeting were the developments of the humanitarian situation in Yemen and the obstacles facing the delivery of assistance to all Yemeni provinces as well as the overall economic situation in Yemen.

Dr. Al-Owaisheq lauded the efforts being exerted by the GCC states in the field of relief for Yemen in their capacity as the biggest donors in the humanitarian field, as well as rehabilitation and development.

The meeting was also briefed on the efforts of the GCC in coordination among donors belonging to the GCC and the regional and international funds, particularly the role being played by the King Salman Centre in coordinating the assistance coming from the GCC countries to Yemen in the humanitarian field.
