The Pohang-class corvette, named "Egypt Youth", docked on Thursday at Ras El-Tin naval base, coming from South Korea.

South Korea gifted Egypt the naval vessel within the framework of the distinguished military ties between the two countries' armed forces and the political leadership's efforts to shore up bilateral cooperation in the various domains.

In a statement, Military Spokesman Tamer el Refaei said the new corvette reflected efforts exerted by the Armed Forces to boost the combat and technical capabilities of the Egyptian Navy. 

The spokesman said the donated corvette has a displacement of around 1,240 tons. It can sail at a speed of 32 knots, it has a rang of about 4,500 nautical miles, he added.

Patrol Combat Corvettes like the Pohang class are used for coastal patrols. They can be equipped with anti-ship, anti-submarine, and anti-aircraft operations. 

The Pohang-class corvette is a class of general purpose corvettes operated by the Republic of Korea Navy. They have served in a coastal defense role during the late Cold War and post Cold War period. 

A total of 24 Pohang-class vessels were built, all constructed in South Korea. Eighteen vessels remain in service.
