US State Secretary Rex W. Tillerson informed Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry of a recent US aid cut hours ahead of announcing the decision, said Foreign Ministry Spokesman Ahmed Abu Zeid on Sunday.

Abu Zeid made the remark in response to a question by diplomatic editors if Egypt knew about the decision.

The spokesman said Shoukry received Tuesday evening a phone call from Tillerson after issuing the decision. This was hours before announcing the decision, he added.
