Cairo - Arab Today
Arab League Secretary General Ahmed Abul Gheit said he is looking forward to cooperating with UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, whose five-year term began on January 1.
According to a statement by the pan-Arab organization on Monday, this came in a letter to Guterres from Abul Gheit who congratulated him on assuming his duties.
Abul Gheit wished the newly-appointed UN chief the best, asserting his belief that Guterres would show interest in achieving peace in the Middle East.
He also referred to the unprecedented developments in Syria, Yemen, Libya and Iraq within a few years.
The UN and Arab League shall coordinate efforts within this context, Abul Gheit reaffirmed, lauding the Troika model which involved the AL, UN and the African Union (AU) to help reach a solution to the Libyan crisis.
The Arab League chief also stated that the Palestinian cause remained at the heart of Middle East issues.
Failure to solve the issue means that instability and extremism would prevail in the Middle East, he said.
More international efforts shall be exerted to end the continued Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories and establish a Palestinian state, Abul Gheit concluded.
