Kuwait renewed its support for Afghanistan in achieving lasting peace and stability through a negotiated diplomatic settlement.


This came during a speech delivered by Acting charge d'affairs of the Kuwaiti permanent mission to the UN headquarters in New York, advisor Talal Al-Fassam, at the Security Council meeting on Afghanistan.


Al-Fassam stressed importance of addressing the threat posed by terrorism through collective commitment to combat the scourge of terrorism within the framework of the international strategy.


"We are holding this meeting just one month ahead of parliamentary elections in Afghanistan," he said, adding that the current phase of Afghanistan is very important and delicate, with intensive consultations among the political parties.


He stressed on importance of national reconciliation and the peace process in Afghanistan. "We are following up closely on the current political movement in the various Afghan provinces and the formation of political alliances and preparations for the upcoming elections", he said, expressing hope that these moves will contribute to reducing tension.


"We are aware that the increase in violence in Afghanistan is a desperate attempt by elements who do not believe in the option of democracy or human rights and do not even want to see stability and security in this country," he added.


The Kuwaiti diplomat called on the international community to continue its support to Afghanistan to reach a comprehensive political settlement.
