Universal's "Pitch Perfect 2" debuted in the first place this weekend with an estimated 70.3 million U.S. dollars, beating the 44.4 million dollars made by " Mad Max: Fury Road" in ticket sales, according to studio estimates from Rentrak.
"Pitch Perfect 2", a musical comedy about an all-female singing group competing with a boys chorus, was off at 3,473 locations in United States and Canada and its three day revenue has already out- grossed the 65-million-dollar final gross of 2012's "Pitch Perfect " in North America.
Elizabeth Banks, actress and director of "Pitch Perfect 2", makes her directorial debut record for highest opening weekend for a first-time director.
The audience breakdown for the film skewed heavily towards female moviegoers (75 percent) and towards moviegoers under the age of 25 (62 percent). First-night moviegoers graded the film a promising "A-" rating on CinemaScore. Critics gave a 68 percent fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
In second place was George Miller's action film "Mad Max: Fury Road". Opening at 3,702 locations, this Warner Bros' fourth outing in the "Mad Max" film series grossed 44.4 million dollars in its first three days. 3D grosses represented 46 percent of the overall gross for "Mad Max: Fury Road" this weekend.
The audience breakdown for the film skewed heavily towards male moviegoers (70 percent) and towards moviegoers over the age of 35 (54 percent). "Mad Max: Fury Road" earned a stunning 98 percent fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a "B+" audience grade from CinemaScore.
Superhero sequel "Avengers: Age of Ultron" fell to the third this weekend with 38.8 million dollars, down a sizable 50 percent from last weekend.
The film has grossed an impressive 372 million dollars, making it the top film of 2015 so far in North America.
