German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier today arrived in Afghanistan on an unannounced visit. More than 3,100 German troops are based in Mazar-i-Sharif in Afghanistan.

German Government decided last Wednesday to extend the Bundeswehr's Afghan mandate for ten months ending late this year (2014). German bundestag has yet to ratify the decision.
