Egypt's permanent envoy to the UN Amr Abul Atta

Egypt's permanent envoy to the UN Amr Abul Atta is leading an international delegation to the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) to get firsthand information about the latest political and security developments in the African country.

A statement by the Foreign Ministry said Tuesday that the visit comes as Egypt chairs the DRC sanctions committee.

The delegates will hold talks with government officials and national parties on the effect of sanctions in restoring security and stability in the east of the country, read the statement.

The committee will visit the eastern DRC to see for themselves the latest developments there and meet with local officials and NGOs.

Afterward, the committee will head for Rwanda and Uganda on visits to discuss means of boosting cooperation with countries in the region in the fight against armed groups in the eastern DRC.

Established in 2003, the committee comprises all 15 members of the Security Council and is tasked with overseeing the arms embargo applied to all foreign and Congolese armed groups and militias operating in North and South Kivu and Ituri, and to groups not party to the Global and All-inclusive agreement in the DRC, as imposed by Security Council resolution 1493.
