Algeria produces 10 million tonnes of waste a year
A senior official in Algeria’s Ministry of Environment has told Arabstoday that economic and social development along with the increasing population in major cities is causing nearly 10 million tonnes of solid waste a year.
Around 97 percent of the
waste is recyclable, particularly plastic, glass and organic materials scraps of fruits and vegetables,” added the official.
However, the absence of an appropriate policy for recycling waste is adding to the issue.
The environment ministry is planning a national programme to recycle solid waste and limit the amount increasing each year. The scheme is also part of the plan to strengthen and promote the national economy across forty Algerian cities.
The scheme aims to manage waste properly by correctly classifying and then recycling it in ways that will not harm the environment.
