Casablanca – Raja Battaoui
Moroccan Prime Minister Abdelilah Benkirane will soon be launching a new plan to tackle violence against women, which is currently on the rise.
Benkirane met several times with the only female minister in
the government, Bassima Alhquaoui, Minister of Social Development, Family and Solidarity.
The meetings aimed at speeding up the law-making process that would criminalise violence against women. A law was proposed by former minister Nouzha Skall during Abbas el-Fassi\'s government.
The law wasn’t approved by the council because some articles were not conform to the constitution and the criminal law. Some elements would have been difficult to enforce. For instance, an article specified that anyone should be allowed to enter someone\'s home if there is any suspicion of domestic violence.
Benkirane and Alhquaoui will hold a conference about domestic violence next Tuesday in Rabat. The presentation will show the Moroccan experience in this field and the achievements done to reduce this phenomenon.
The conference will be attended by international organisations, government representatives and international experts, where different parties will be able to share their experience in tackling domestic violence.
