Sonatrach won a prize for decreasing gas flaring
Algeria’s Sonatrach was awarded a prize by the Global Gas Flaring Reduction forum in London for its efforts to reduce the amount of environmental damage. The award was handed to the company by the international forum which seeks to enhance efforts to decrease the amount of gas
used in development. Recently held in London, the forum aimed to encourage efforts taken by companies to protect the environment.
Global Gas Flaring Reduction is a World Bank assisted initiative; it honoured Sonatrach after the company’s intensive efforts in establishing more than 32 projects to decrease the flaring gases which cause the greenhouse effect. These projects including the Salah CO2 storage project, allowed the restoring of 260 billion cubic meters and the reduction of gas flaring from 78.6 percent in 1973 to 9.7 percent in 2010.
Sonatrach commented that their measures were imposed in light of the environmental policy of Algeria which is “relentlessly recommending enhancement of efforts aiming at limiting gases causing the green house effect, in adherence with the international treaties concerning climate change”.
