Cairo - Arab Today
At the heart of The Take – a documentary from Canadian journalist and activist Naomi Klein and directed by Avi Lewis, Klein's husband – is an auto plant in the suburbs of Buenos Aires.
The action of the title refers to the workers taking control of the factory, part of the "recovered factory" movement that emerged in Argentina in the early 2000s in response to the country's economic crisis – one of the largest self-managed events in which workers seized and managed the factories where they used to work.
The movie won the documentary award at the 2004 AFI Festival and was nominated for several 2005 Gemini awards given by the Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television.
The film will be screened at the Samer Soliman Institution for Political Development (SSIPD), a political development and research institute founded in September 2013 in honour of the late Samer Soliman (1968-2012), a prominent writer and political economy professor who recently died after a struggle with cancer.
