HE Foreign Minister Dr Khalid bin Mohammed Al Attiyah on Monday held a meeting with Secretary-General of the United Nations Ban Ki-moon at the UN Headquarters in New York.
During the meeting, they discussed key developments in the region, including the question of Palestine and the situation in Yemen, Syria and Libya.
HE Foreign Minister highlighted the efforts of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) to back a political solution in Yemen, noting the importance of the meeting called for by President of the Republic of Yemen Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi in Riyadh to which various Yemeni parties were invited.
He also stressed the importance of all parties' acceptance to the invitation as well as the role of the United Nations and to commit all parties to implement the Security Council's resolution 2216.
HE Al Attiyah also pointed to the humanitarian assistance provided by the State of Qatar to the Yemeni people.
On the situation in Syria, HE Foreign Minister reiterated that Geneva 1 communique is the basis for a political solution, expressing support for Special Envoy Staffan de Mistura and his efforts to hold a political dialogue in Geneva, underlining the need for its results to meet Syrian people aspirations.
With regard to the situation in Libya, HE Dr Khalid bin Mohammed Al Attiyah expressed Qatar's full support to the efforts of the Special Representative of the Secretary-General Bernardino Leon in order to reach a political solution that satisfies all parties, asserting the need that the interests of one party do not prevail over another.
For his part, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon praised the mediation efforts made by the State of Qatar between Eritrea and Djibouti, and also expressed his appreciation for Qatar's efforts in the humanitarian fields that covered many countries.
