Arab League (AL) Secretary General Ahmed Abul Gheit asserted the importance of preserving the Syrian sovereignty, stressing that no foreign fighters or terror groups should be present in Syria.
Abul Gheit made the remarks during a consultative meeting Wednesday in the presence of the permanent representatives of the AL member states on the ongoing contacts as regards the Syrian crisis and the outcome of the Geneva talks.
The meeting was also attended by UN Deputy Special Envoy for Syria Ramzy Ezzeldin.
Meanwhile, Abul Gheit asserted the AL’s firm stance on supporting any agreement or effort aimed to end the bloodshed of Syrians and helping deliver humanitarian aid to besieged areas in the conflict-torn country.
He also expressed his rejection of any arrangements that lead to Syria's division.
In the same regard, Abul Gheit emphasized that any temporary arrangements taken to stop the bloodshed in Syria are not to replace a political settlement of its crisis in accordance with the UN Security Council resolution no. 2254.
