Egypt’s Imams Without Boundaries group have called for stepping up a “legitimate” campaign to protect the rights of imams and mosques from perceived Shiite harassment. The organisation is reportedly in talks with Ministry of Awqaf officials, who run various departments concerned with Egyptian religious endowments, in attempts to implements imams’ demands. Those allegedly responsible for insulting Sunni religious leaders could face prosecution, Imams Without Boundaries said in a statement on Saturday. The movement has meanwhile called on Minister of Awqaf Mahmoud Hamdy Zakzouk to protect mosques -- including Egypt’s leading al-Azhar mosque and university -- from Iranian Shiites, whom it claims threaten Egyptian national security.
