Egyptian Tourism and Antiquities Police on Wednesday succeeded in recovering a 19th-century painting stolen two days earlier from the Mena House Oberoi Hotel near the Giza pyramids. The painting, drawn in 1899, depicts women gathering in a palace adorned with Islamic architectural motifs. According to a statement to the press, investigators discovered the missing work of art after receiving a phone call from an unknown source who informed them that it was located in the hotel’s basement. Policemen subsequently found the painting at the said location, wrapped in linen. Three hotel employees are currently in custody pending investigation.
