Senior Palestinian prosecutors and police investigators participated in a course on cyber crimes and IT forensic programme to enable them to investigate and prosecute sophisticated crimes, said an EUPOL COPPS press release on Thursday. It said this specialised training, which is funded by EUPOL COPPS, aims at introducing to prosecutors and investigators the best methods to combat crimes and to collect electronic evidence from seized computers and telephones. The participants -- five chiefs of Criminal Investigation Department and prosecutors from the Attorney General Office and the Palestinian Anti Corruption Commission -- have asked for more training in collecting and presenting digital evidence to courts, according to the release. The Palestinian public extensively use computers and smart phones and utilize other sophisticated computerized technology to run their firms. However the Palestinian prosecutors hardly secure and present digital evidence to the courts. Two Swedish experts gave the program: one is a Senior Public Prosecutor and expert in cybercrime and digital evidence and the other is a police officer working as team leader in the IT Forensic team, cyber crime unit, National Bureau of Investigation in Sweden. EUPOL COPPS’ legal experts facilitated the workshop.
