U.S. media projected on Wednesday that a record number of women will represent their states in the new Senate. Democrat Heidi Heitkamp won the Senate race in North Dakota, making a total of 20 women in the new Senate, CNN has projected. Democrats now have a 53-seat majority in the Senate in return for 45 Republicans and two independents. Elizabeth Warren will be the first woman senator to represent Massachusetts, and Mazie Hirono will be the first female U.S. senator from Hawaii and the first Asian-American woman in the Senate. Claire McCaskill kept her seat in Missouri and Tammy Baldwin will represent Wisconsin. Meanwhile, Republicans retained their majority in the House of Representatives.
