Kuwait is now allowing Kuwaiti women to sponsor their foreign husbands and their children, a local daily reported. However, a Kuwaiti woman who became naturalised after she married a Kuwaiti man loses the privilege if she marries another man after she is divorced or if she is widowed, Al Watan daily said on Friday. The rule was stipulated to ensure that there is no abuse of the system. In some cases, non-Kuwaiti women marry Kuwaiti men to obtain the Kuwaiti nationality. Afterwards, they get a divorce and remarry men from their country of origin, according to the daily. Under the new rule, the Kuwaiti woman is allowed to sponsor her husband for one year. The sponsorship is renewed on two occasions. After the passage of three years, the wife can sponsor her husband for five years. However, a woman who gets pregnant in the first year of her marriage can sponsor her husband for five year on the grounds that the pregnancy is testimony that the marriage is not bogus. Kuwait and the other member states of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) have been using an employer-based sponsorship system for recruiting migrant workers that does not allow foreigners to enter and work within the GCC unless they are sponsored by a ministry, a company or a national.
