Cairo - MENA
The Egyptian Darul Iftaa (House of giving religious opinion) praised on Friday a decision by New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio to add two Muslim feasts to the public school holidays in the US state.
Starting next fall, New York City's 1.1 million students in the nation's biggest public school system will get days off for the most-observed holidays in Islam, Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha.
In its statement, Darul Iftaa said that this step deepens the culture of coexistence and acceptance of the Other, and helps promote tolerance among people.
It also called on other US states to follow suit, noting that the two Muslim feasts are already considered holidays in schools of Massachusetts, Vermont and New Jersey.
