Russian universities have failed to make the grade, in a World Reputation Rankings 2012 survey by The Times newspaper in Britain. The list of the world\'s top 100 universities ranked by reputation alone, based on the largest international survey of academic opinion, did not include any Russian higher education institute. Last year the country\'s largest university, the Lomonosov Moscow State University, came in at 33rd place. The \"elite group\" of universities in the top 10 is dominated by American and British institutions with one Japanese university breaking into the top tier. Harvard tops the list and the University of Cambridge is third, with the University of Tokyo coming in eighth. The Times Higher Education World University Rankings employ 13 separate performance indicators designed to capture the full range of university activities, from teaching and research to knowledge transfer.
