Interim Education Minister Taïeb Baccouche took part recently, in Rome, in a world conference held by the Italy-based International "Hands off Cain" Abolitionist Organisation on the 2011 World Death Penalty Report. Guest of honor at the conference, the Education Minister reminded, in his speech, that in conformity with the people's sovereign will as expressed by the January 14 Revolution, Tunisia has taken the path of real democratic transition that would guarantee all human rights, notably by being party to the relevant international treaties. Tunisia's Education Minister spoke, in particular, of the recent ratification of the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court, as well as the Convention against Torture and other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Punishments and Treatments. He stressed that this commitment to defend the fundamental human rights and dignity is driving Tunisia to ratify a second protocol on the international pact of political and civil rights that aims to abolish the death penalty.
