A powerful 7,1 magnitude earthquake struck Sunday afternoon Pakistan’s most parts of northern areas and Punjab including the capital Islamabad.

According to Pakistan Meteorological Department PMD, the earthquake measured 7.1 on the Richter scale and its epicentre was at a depth of 235 km in the Hindu Kush mountain range bordering Afghanistan and Tajikistan.

The earthquake, which continued 60 second, was followed the aftershocks that made people to rush out of their homes and other buildings.

The national disaster authority has not yet received information on losses and damages.

This region has the highest rates of seismicity and largest earthquakes in the Himalaya region, caused mainly by movement on thrust faults. Last year the PMD recorded 851 seismic disturbances.
