Chinese adversely affected by Typhoon Khanun

Typhoon Khanun affected some 972,000 residents in the Chinese provinces of Guangdong, Hainan, Zhejiang, Fujian and Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, Xinhua quoted the country's Ministry of Civil Affairs (MCA) as saying Tuesday.

Some 407,000 people were evacuated, while more than 900 needed emergency relief supplies.

Nearly 100 houses collapsed and 54,100 hectares of crops were damaged across the five regions, while more than 500 hectares destroyed. Total direct economic losses amount to 560 million yuan (about 84.6 million US dollars).

East China's Zhejiang Province suffered the heaviest financial impact with 430 million yuan of economic losses and 155,000 people affected, while in south China's Guangdong Province, 570,000 residents were affected, 232,000 of whom were evacuated.

Khanun was the 20th typhoon to hit China this year. It made landfall in Xuwen County, Guangdong, Monday afternoon before weakening to tropical depression.
