Interchange, avenue revamp project completed.

In response to directives from His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince, Deputy Supreme Commander and First Deputy Prime Minister to reduce traffic congestion across the roads’ network in Bahrain, the Works, Municipalities Affairs & Urban Planning Minister Essam bin Abdullah Khalaf said the ministry has completed the revamp of Ghous Highway Interchange and the Airport Avenue in Muharraq.
The minister explained that Phase 2 of the project comprises of adding two separate lanes along Shaikh Isa Causeway towards Busaiteen, two lanes towards the Highway Avenue and another separate lane enabling vehicles to turn right towards Ghous Highway. Also, the Airport Avenue carrying traffic to Manama has been expanded and two lanes have been added for traffic heading right towards Busaiteen and another heading left towards Ghous Highway.

Phase 1 of the project was launched in July, comprising of expanding the Airport Avenue; with a right turn towards Busaiteen.

According to the minister, this short-term plan is part of the wider $1.2 billion development plan aiming to expand the roads network, which is included within the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Development Programme. The projects are expected to transform the roads network tremendously to be able to accommodate the rapid increase in population and the housing and urban growth in the Kingdom.

Taking into consideration that implementation of strategic projects could take 3-4 years, the ministry is presently implementing this short-term plan in order to put in place urgent solutions for traffic congestions along a number of intersections.

The media campaign is implemented upon the directives of His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince, Deputy Supreme Commander and First Deputy Prime Minister to alleviate traffic congestions across 11 locations in the Kingdom.
